Kill Bill - an accidental rewatch that reopened my eyes
Let’s talk cinema, because it’s been a while!
Kill Bill: Quentin Tarantino is just one of us at the end of the day
The movie happened to be on the TV and I rewatched the whole thing. The last time I watched it was two years ago, when my love for cinema started. I, like many other cinephiles, have caught themselves trapped inside the cinematic world because of Tarantino and especially because of Pulp Fiction. And when I first started to get into cinema Tarantino was the first director that I started to almost binge watch his movies, that meant that maybe on the first watch the appreciation for his movies wasn’t that broad, I didn’t know much else, I just knew I liked his movies.
Two years later here we are, a lot of movies watched later and I have revisited one of his films again, this time it’s a bomb of a film: Kill Bill Vol.1 (and yes I do intend in rewatching the second part very soon). The thing about Kill Bill is, you know for a fact the man just had a lot of fun making the movie. You can see the movie was made by someone who didn’t study cinema but watched a lot of movies instead (every cinephile’s dream).
Criative camera and colour work and the music
What. A. Feel. Good. Film. And part of that goes to the cinematography and soundtrack. The shots are all so unique, so different, so criative, so poetic dare I say, so well done, you can tell a very big cinema fan made this film, it’s almost like a very big cliché, it takes from all the classics and makes a grand madness, some shots and framings are so familiar to us that you know what’s about to happen, and that’s not a bad thing, because the movie never ceases to surprise us anyway.
The colour is so in there, it’s saturated but doesn’t feel like it, it feels like the world is just like that, with so much going on, the colour just helps complete what the film. Tarantino also messes with B&W at times which is something I love to see in a movie, in a way it makes it more dramatic but in another way it contrasts with the colourful festival that’s going on, genius if you ask me.
The music, as expected, is a great experience to the ears. This time though it’s extra. Tarantino always knows how to choose his soundtracks but some of them really stick with you forever, Kill Bill is one of them. Every song fits so well and feels like it was made for the film, the dialogue is the action and the action is the music.
Casting and acting: bad b*tches only
This is an absolute girl power movie and I’m all here for it.
I mean, your old friend/enemy almost kills you, you invite her to coffee and then she proceeds to actually kill you? Surreal. A woman dressed in all yellow wins alone in a 1v88 battle with samurai swords? Even more surreal.
Uma Thurman is the IT girl for this movie, her facial expressions alone are the best. She also kills a man without even being able to walk.
Lucy Liu says “I’ll collect your f*cking head” in front of powerful men.
Why so much violence? “Because it’s so much fun, Jan!”
Why such a random subject?
I haven’t been watching a lot of movies, not only do I not have that much time nor do I remember to do so, and sometimes I watch a movie and remember why I like the seventh art. Kill Bill is the type of film to make you remember why we love, make and watch movies. If you’re feeling like you haven’t been paying much attention to cinema, go watch a movie you know will awaken that love again. Maybe watch a Tarantino picture! Have fun!
